Training and certification would enhance the medical examiner’s ability to determine if a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver can safely handle the mental and physical demands of driving a CMV. The following activities are underway to develop specifications for medical examiner training and certification.

FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook

Driver medical fitness for duty is a critical element of the FMCSA safety program. Our Medical Examiner Handbook provides information and guidance to the medical examiner who performs the CMV driver medical examination.

Role Delineation Study

FMCSA has completed a Role Delineation Study (RDS). The results provide a blueprint for the medical examiner certification test and are being used by subject matter experts to assist in the development of core curriculum specifications for medical examiner training. A variety of methods were used to complete the study, including a literature review, direct observations of CMV driver physical examinations, a national survey of medical examiners, and medical examiner expert Working Integrated Product Team (WIPT) meetings.
